I drive transformation activities as a value stream, with epics, stories and a backlog. In other words, we adopt agile working from the start.

Concretely, I use:

  • Themes to reflect the business objectives that we want to target.

  • Transformation Epics that each focus on a specific change area.

  • Transformation Stories—specific changes—that we can accomplish within a limited time span.

  • Story Mapping and OKRs to strategise a roadmap with priorities.

The use of scaling frameworks

Creating enterprise agility is more than a scaling exercise. However, some constructs, organization patterns, or practices from known agile-at-scale frameworks may be applied when they are a good fit. Examples could include squads as the minimal viable self-organizing organization unit that can deliver value to a customer. Or PI Planning for programs with a large number of highly dependent teams. When I use these elements, it’s still never in a copy-and-paste style.
